I photograph what gets my attention. I’m drawn to places that feel like they hold memory. Not just my memories, but everyone’s. I often contemplate the idea that geographical locations hold the feelings and emotions of all the people who have moved through them. This has been one of my biggest questions over the years.
I photograph animals a lot: birds, dogs. I like trees and fog. I like the shapes things make. Often I’m just trying to capture a mood or feeling, to pin it down into an image.
The most ordinary moments can be epic when you’re a photographer. I feel lucky to be able to see the world this way.
I studied photography at college a hundred years ago. I had zero technical expertise and didn’t complete the technical paper or really land on what an F stop was but someone at the examining board threw me a bone and passed me anyway for my practical work. Since that time, I have carried on avoiding learning how cameras work and followed my gut.
